Worcester Diner #645 was built in the summer of 1929 for Mr. Marcus and Mr. Webster of Milford, Massachusetts and was named the Exchange Diner. The diner was later sold and relocated to Lynnfield, Massachusetts where it operated as the Suntaug Diner. When the owners ordered Worcester Diner #844, the old Suntaug Diner was returned to the factory in Worcester where it was extensively remodeled for resale in 1956.
Diner #645 was purchased in May 1956 to moved to Buzzards Bay on Cape Cod where it operated as Gibson's Diner. The diner closed in 1975 and was sold in 1980 to Mark Dietch, a restaurateur from Charleston, South Carolina. Despite his success with two other restaurants Mark Dietch couldn't find time to put this one in operation.
Worcester Diner #645 was then moved from Charleston, South Carolina to Santa Monica, California. In 1995 Track 16 Gallery purchased the diner and brought it to Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. Fortino Delgadillo lead the refurbishing team. We repaired some of the stainless steel and had one red panel re-powdercoated. The main issue was the decaying ceiling. Fortino hand crafted and installed a beautiful mahogany ceiling. In April 1995, the diner was the center of Track 16's seminal exhibition EATS.
This Worcester Diner, in excellent condition. It comes the original "Worchester Lunch Car Company #645" build tag from 1936. The diner originally was set up with stools and six two seat tables along the front wall. The tables are no longer part of the diner. The original Belding Hall refrigerator is still intact as well as the Monel (german silver) grill hood, Tennessee Marble counter, porcelain enamel cast iron stools and black and white tile floor and walls. The diner measures 12.5' x 36'.
